These unique baskets are made of sisal by African artisans. Sisal is a tropical fiber made from the agave plant. From the leaves of this plant is extracted the fiber from which rope is made. Sisal rope is dyed in a neutral sand colour using natural dye after which it is woven into a basket.

Basket weaving is a tradition in the Kamba & Taita Culture. The sisal basket weavers come from remote areas of eastern and coastal provinces of Kenya.

The baskets are made by "Basket Weaver Women's Groups" in rural villages. Most groups meet every two weeks to weave baskets together. They continue it when they are at home, on the bus or while walking to neighbours.
